Deskpets was founded by father / daughter welding team of Jason and Alissa.  Here is our story…

When Alissa was 11 years old, one of her favorite tv shows was MythBusters.  When she proclaimed that she wanted to be a Mythbuster, she said she needed to learn how to weld since that is a skill several of the Mythbusters possess.  Alissa, then 11 years old, was too young to take a formal welding course.  This meant that her father, Jason, had to learn how to weld so he could teach her.

Jason signed up for a couple of welding courses at a local Tech center and had great instructors.  When one of the instructors learned why Jason was there, he extended an invitation for Alissa to come in before class for some instruction.  Alissa had two hours of one-on-one time with the teacher where she learned mig and stick welding, as well as how to use a plasma cutter and oxy-acetylene torch.

It wasn’t long after this when Jason bought a welder and set up shop in the garage.  Alissa and Jason created a variety of items as their skills improved.  Eventually, with the encouragement of several people who said their creations should be displayed at craft shows, Deskpets, LLC was born.

Until recently, Alissa was the chief welder and creative visionary.  Jason made some pieces as well, but often fills the roles of assistant welder, head trainer, chief motivator, financial backer, chauffeur, logistics coordinator, quality control inspector, and first-aid provider.

Alissa and Jason use scrap and repurposed material whenever possible.  Their workbench is made from warehouse rack shelving and the plasma table is constructed entirely of angle iron from bed frames.  Their products have used pieces from barbeques, bicycles, toaster ovens, chain saws, auto parts, and rusty tools.  Garage sales, second-hand stores, and metal scrapyards have led to some good finds which would otherwise have made their way to the landfill.

Alissa and Jason have had a great time working together in this venture.  So far, the injuries have only been minor and the garage hasn’t burned down, so they continue to fuse metal into unique crafts that hopefully put a smile on your face.
